About Kent Companies

Company History

Founded in 1957 by John VanderLaan, Kent Concrete spent the prosperous post-war years pouring residential flatwork. From these simple beginnings, Kent Concrete began a long history of safety, innovation, expertise, quality, productivity and customer service.

In the late 1970's, John's sons, Al and Roger, took the reigns of the company and diversified its offerings into foundations and other concrete-related specialty markets, including concrete pumping, floor underlayments, concrete polishing and staining, facility services, mudjacking, foundation restoration, excavation and masonry. By the late 1990's Kent Concrete became Kent Companies to better reflect the broad range of services it offers. Locations in Detroit, Lansing and Traverse City, Michigan and Elkhart, Indiana were added proving that Kent Companies is a large force in regional construction.

In 2000, Kent Companies acquired what is now Kent Companies, Texas, in Dallas, Texas. From this base of operations, Kent Companies brings its expertise throughout the United States' southern tier, including Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

In 2007 and 2008, Kent Companies expanded its geographic capabilities with the addition of offices in Bentonville, Arkansas and Charlotte, North Carolina. From these bases of operation, Kent Companies brings its experience in concrete construction to the Southeastern United States.

2009 saw additional changes when Al's son Jeff and Roger's son Chris, took ownership of Kent Companies, bringing third-generation family leadership to the company. Since the beginning, the leaders of Kent Companies have prided themselves on continuing to diversify their offerings to other construction-related services, but also stay current with concrete-related construction, which remains the core of the company's strengths.
