It takes a lot to keep the Big Red Machine firing on all cylinders. This summer, we’re blitzing all of our job sites with summer refreshments to keep you fueled throughout the day. We’re also giving away $100 gas gift cards at each blitz because we want to help fuel your summer fun.
Watch for a RED Nation blitz coming to your job site soon. We’ll share photos on the RED Feed and on our Facebook page. Take your own photos and text them to 256-426-5026.
Working Safely in the Heat: The OSHA Heat App
The OSHA Heat App allows you to calculate the heat index for your worksite, and based on the heat index, it displays a risk level to outdoor workers. You can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect against heat-related illness. You’ll receive reminders about drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the workload for new workers, training on heat illness signs and symptoms, and monitoring each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.

Project Profile: Huff Park Boardwalk – Grand Rapids, Michigan
Division 1910 – Deep Foundation Solutions
Submitted by Duane Andrus, Vice President
Huff Park is a wetlands-based park located in northeast Grand Rapids, Michigan. An expansive boardwalk makes it possible for visitors to explore the nature preserve on a safe walkway throughout the marsh area. When the boardwalk deteriorated beyond safe usage, the City of Grand Rapids turned to the Division 1910 team to provide structural support for the wetlands-based walkway.
The Huff Park boardwalk measures 3,720 feet long. We installed 703 helical piers and 157 helical tiebacks to support the boardwalk. Together, the piers and tiebacks support the modular composite decking for the walking path. A helical tieback was battered at every other pier location (besides turns in the boardwalk) to provide higher support capacity.
The Huff Park wetlands are subject to flooding, and site access required creative solutions and equipment. We deployed an Argo (an 8-wheel amphibious vehicle) to stage the pier and tieback material along the site. The team used mud mats to move a mini-excavator over areas with flowing water. While it was necessary to cut some small trees to allow enough access for installation, we left minimal impact on the natural site.
Our team demonstrated productivity even in challenging environments. We installed over 20 piers per day on average. The team dedicated 2,530 field production hours to the boardwalk and completed the entire project on schedule.
