Kent Concrete Wins ABC Excellence in Construction Award for Hastings Streetscape

Excellence is built through adaptability, collaboration, and craftsmanship. Which is why Kent Concrete is proud to earn a 2025 Associated Builders and Contractors Western Michigan Chapter Excellence in Construction Award in the Concrete category for our work on the Hastings Streetscape Project.

“This award is a reflection of the commitment and pride our crews bring to every project,” said Jordan Berens, Division Manager at Kent Concrete. “Downtown revitalization work is complex when you’re working in a live environment and can’t shut the city down. Our field team showed adaptability and a willingness to work with the city at every step, adjusting schedules and coordinating placements to keep businesses accessible.”

Tight staging areas, heavy traffic, and the need for continuous pedestrian access meant sequencing and precision were critical. By placing decorative and stained concrete first and standard concrete last, the crew protected finishes and delivered a clean, high-quality result. The project was completed in partnership with General Contractor Katerberg VerHage, with Project Manager Kevin Arevalo, Superintendent Blane Lester, and Foreman Fernando Bedolla leading Kent’s field effort.

“The Hastings Streetscape showcases the best of Kent’s Four Hallmarks: Safety, Productivity, Quality, and Customer Service,” added Dave Williamson, Executive Vice President of Kent Companies. “Winning this award is an honor, but seeing the community use and enjoy the space every day is the real measure of success.”

The finished streetscape features a blend of functional and decorative concrete that enhances pedestrian safety and strengthens the heart of downtown Hastings. It’s a project that reflects Kent Concrete’s dedication to technical excellence and community impact.
